The course of pantoums

8 May

At a community meal at my church the other night, someone read out a pantoum poem. It reminded me that I wrote a pantoum poem myself, back when I was in school, and I thought it was rather good. In fact, I still do, so I’m going to inflict it on you.

The course of true love never did run smooth,
There never was a painless real romance,
For when you thought he was telling you the truth,
The magic can be broken by a glance.

There never was a painless real romance.
The human heart can’t skip too many beats.
The magic can be broken by a glance
And you see it all collapse around your feet.

The human heart can’t skip too many beats.
Nothing lasts forever, it is said,
And you see it all collapse around your feet,
The champagne bubbles burst inside your head.

Nothing lasts forever, it is said,
For when you thought he was telling you the truth,
The champagne bubbles burst inside your head.
The course of true love never did run smooth.
