Hello from Split, a buzzing, overpriced port town where the girls are all young, sunburnt and not wearing much, and the main language seems to be English. As you can imagine, I’m fitting right in 🙄 My Croatian for Beginners is scoring me no brownie points here.
Still, how can you dislike a place where the old town is built in and around an actual Roman palace? I just had dinner in a palace!

To get here, though, I had to walk a long way to the bus station (they are building a tram line to it, but that’s not much help this year) and take a five-and-a-half hour bus ride. It was OK, although a lot better before the final hour when the bus filled up with people at a tourist resort who had reserved seats and made everybody else move. There was a half-hour rest stop on the way, and although the service station charged ridiculous prices, it still made the journey much more bearable. The bus wasn’t too hot (too cold, if anything) and the road wasn’t too winding. At the end of it, one of the girls who got on at the final stop (with the reservations) said “That was the worst journey ever!” Oh my sweet summer child, you don’t know you’re born 😂
Before setting off on my big bus journey, I did get the chance to sample at least one of Zagreb’s delights: the Archaeological Museum. I’ve seen quite a lot of archaeological museums, but this had some nice stuff, especially the jewellery (some of which I would gladly wear), and some statues that I think I recognise from textbooks.

It also had a really gross mummy that I didn’t photograph because 🤮 It still had its teeth and hair!
So that’s my day in reverse, essentially. Tomorrow, if the weather holds, I’m going to the beach 🤞 🏖️
