I’ve just had a wee explainer piece published on Premier Christianity all about Ash Wednesday. As its origins lie in early church history (which is ancient history), it’s very much my field.
No spoilers here – you can just go and read it on the Premier site. But I will tell you one little snippet that didn’t make it into the article: the man who made Ash Wednesday official is the same man who started the Crusades. Urban II liked to make a mark, it seems.
