The leaves are turning, and so are the wee helicopter seeds that are falling from the trees (don’t ask me which trees – I’m a city girl) and it seems like a good time to talk about some of the things I like about autumn.
Autumn aesthetic
I’ve just applied my new autumnal nail wraps. I wanted to get them on before my book launch on Tuesday, and I had a spare half hour this afternoon.
Although I’ll be sad to put away the shorts, sleeveless tops and summer dresses, I do enjoy the deeper, richer colours of clothing that come out in autumn and winter, as well as the snuggly cashmeres. Before I know it, it will time to put on my burgundy wool coat! By which time I’ll be complaining about the temperature.
Autumn weather
But for the time being, the weather is still mild, even warm at times, and there hasn’t been too much rain. Autumn can be bad for rain, but you also get bright, crisp days, misty mornings, and dramatic storms that are fun to experience from inside your double- glazed dwelling.
New starts
This is probably the main one. In some calendars, including the academic one, autumn is the start of the new year. It makes me think of new schoolbags and shoes, and new stationery, the smell of leather and pencil sharpenings. It gives you a chance, if it’s needed, to reset the year.
It’s also a very good time to launch (here comes the product placement) a book set in an academic environment, such as The Sarcophagus Scroll. Ellie, the main character, would actually have had her freshers’ week a couple of weeks ago, but it’s close enough.
