I am very sleepy today because last night I was up past my bedtime, appearing on the Monday Night Fan Club on Radio 5 Live.
It was hosted by Colin Murray, and the topic this week was Robin Hood – hence my involvement. My fellow talking heads were Bob White, president of the World Wide Robin Hood Society (and a lovely man) and Professor Stephen Knight, a bona fide leading expert on Robin Hood. So just a tiny bit intimidating, then, but everyone was very nice, even when disagreeing.
It was a good mixture, actually, not so much of opinions on Robin Hood as of ways of looking at the subject. The title of the post refers to the fact that I’m all about the historical stuff, and what we can actually know about the man (who was not really) called Robin Hood; Stephen Knight knows an fathomless amount about the mythology and cultural symbolism of Robin Hood; and Bob White champions the legends of Robin Hood – the kind of well-known stories that make it into the TV, film and comics representations of “the hero of Sherwood”. And there was also an interview with the current Sheriff of Nottingham, although she doesn’t seem like a villain at all.
If that sounds interesting, click on the button below to listen. The programme should be available until the end of October 2022. The Fan Club part starts two hours into the show – just use the slider.
And if you’d like to know more about the real Robin Hood, you can order a copy of my slim book for not very much money at all from your bookshop of preference, or get the ebook for even less money.
