My year in review – 2024

29 Dec

It feels like I’ve had my head down all year and barely registered what I’ve been up to, so I’ve just scrolled through my calendar, photos and blog to find out what I actually did do this year!

A View from (and of) a Bridge

7 Sep

Many of you will know that I am a bit of a bridge enthusiast. How it happened is a long and not especially interesting story, but suffice it to say that I am now writing a book on Glasgow’s history told through its bridges. So naturally, I was very excited by the opening of the new Govan Footbridge (or the Pointy Bridge, as I insist on calling it).

Budgie romance take 2: Artemis and Apollo

30 Jul

Regular readers will know that last year I bought a male companion for my lonely budgie, Artemis, and they hit it off like a Mills & Boon novel. But unlike a Mills & Boon novel, they did not live happily ever after because Parzival passed away after only a few months 😭

Transports of joy

11 Apr

This week I’ve been staying in East Kilbride, guinea pig sitting, so I treated myself to a zonecard to make the rigmarole of travelling between Glasgow and EK less annoying. But the annoyingess of travel is very much in the eye of the traveller.

Back to the Bubble

2 Feb

A wee photo post for you, because I was called upon this week to go to Glenrothes for work. It is not the most photogenic of locations, being one of those ugly new towns that are all shopping centres and roundabouts, but as I had already travelled for over three hours (!) I thought “what’s another hour?” and went for lunch in St Andrews, which is much prettier.

My year in review – 2023

30 Dec

It’s not been a great year for me. All work and not enough play made Karen a dull girl in 2023; Artemis’s avian romance ended in tragedy; and there was the major disappointment of not getting Eurovision tickets 😭 But it hasn’t been all bad. Let’s have a look at it.

Gingerbread creations

21 Dec

How is your Christmas prep coming along? Mine is going pretty well. All the presents are bought, wrapped and sent; the cards have been posted; and I have applied my Christmassy nail wraps (a very important step). I don’t have to worry about all that nonsense about buying enough food for an army because, as the black sheep of the family, I always spend the day itself at someone else’s house. But, for the last few years, I have contributed a gingerbread structure each year, so that’s what I was doing all of yesterday, and some of the day before.

Artemis and Parzival – a Love Story

31 Jul

Those of you who have been following for a while will know that I usually keep a pet bird – but just the one. That changed recently when I realised that my shy budgie Artemis was never going to be true friends with me, and needed a companion of her own species.

Be more tourist

30 Jun

Another photo post? Have I been on holiday again? Well, yes and no. (Mostly no.)

Oh I do like to be a côté de the seaside!

31 May The Cote d'Azur

After a very long winter I finally managed to get away on holiday to somewhere hot and sunny – which means that you are in for a photo post. You can revel vicariously in my photos of sun, sea and quirky ceramics, or you can just skip this one if it would make you too envious.
